Taylor wisely points out that the best way to learn which furniture, furnishings and coverings work together is by flipping through a range of interiors magazines. No one book can substitute for a handful of carefully chosen subscriptions. Taylor's own attempt here to cover all bases--from Shaker to tribal--can become positively feverish, as when she describes a trompe l'oeil painting of a window with its view beyond. "This option," she writes, "means you could create the vista of your dreams, maybe overlooking the Hanging Gardens of Babylon".
But Taylor's enthusiasm is infectious. Each full-page photograph is fully explored, Taylor explaining in detail how all the elements work together to shape and style each interior. Her approach to colour and tone, and the way they can be used to reshape often poky modern interiors, is especially good. --Simon Ings
