Superman's greatest enemy, Lex Luthor, is dead. The most powerful man in Metropolis -- bar Superman -- has been consumed by his own dark desire to see the Man of Steel destroyed. To the world at large Luthor was a businessman, a philanthropist, the man who made Metropolis. Only Superman and few others knew of the heart of darkness that beat in his breast, but now even that has been stilled. Luthor's brain, however...well, that's another matter altogether. When the mysterious, and hitherto unheard from, Lex Luthor the Second lays claim to the Luthor inheritance, Superman begins to suspect that his nemesis may have found a way to reach from beyond the grave, with lethal intent!

Review:
From his "mad scientist" beginnings to his current status as a multi-billionaire super-businessman, Lex Luthor has always been Superman's most persistent foe. In this selection of tales, there is a satisfying melding of the two personas. Having fashioned a Kryptonite ring to always keep Superman at bay, Luthor discovers the radiation is killing him. While the world watches, a round-the-world speed record turns tragic when he apparently perishes. Months later, Luthor's "long-lost son" emerges from the Australian Outback, ready to claim his father's empire. All of Metropolis is enamoured by this new Luthor, but Superman begins to suspect that his nemesis might have gone to the ultimate length to cheat death. While this does not have the impact of The Death of Superman arc, this is a good chance to see Luthor at his most malevolent, fanatically devoted to ensuring that his influence is not diminished, by death or The Man of Steel. While some may be put off by the fact that the extensive supporting cast often sidelines Superman and by the fluctuating art styles, the writing is high-calibre, with many great Luthor moments. When faced with irrefutable proof of Superman's identity, his colossal arrogance blinds him: "I know that no man with the power of Superman would ever pretend to be a mere human!" --Danny Graydon
