From the blurb: "'It has long been my intention to publish a series of works, which, when completed, contain coloured groups of all the ornamental flowers in British gardens, as well those grown under glass, as in the open air, the whole series will form a more comprehensive illustration of the kind of plants belonging to the different orders, than any other work which has yet been published". Jane Loudon (1807-58). Mrs Loudon set herself this enormous task, but between 1841 and 1848 she completed five extensive volumes covering ornamental annual, bulbous, perennial and greenhouse plants. With each plate displaying a number of different flowers, these volumes provide a magnificent record of the wide and varied plants, which grow in the gardens around us. Painting as an amateur, Mrs Loudon's wish was to inspire new gardeners and to educate and encourage them to appreciate flowers as she did. The astonishing beauty of these watercolours certainly fulfils this aim and enlightens us as to which colour combinations of flowers are the most successful when planted together. Presented in this beautiful book is a selection of the illustrations from Mrs Loudon's works on Ornamental Flowers. With ninety colour illustrations, they include some of our favourite garden plants, "which in their turn are interspersed with a whole host of beautiful flowers, of which few persons know even the names". This edition opens with poppies, evening primroses, nasturtiums and other ornamental annuals, which Mrs Loudon considers as "perhaps the most generally interesting" of all kinds of flowers. The bulbs, of which she says, "Nothing can exceed the brilliancy and variety of the colour displayed by their flowers. the tulips and the irises, which in their turn are succeeded by the showy gladioluses and the stately lilies", are then followed by the perennials, which include Christmas roses, lupins, dahlias, primulas, cinerarias and many other flowering plants found in our gardens. Ornamental Flowers provides a wonderful overview of the work of one of the best-loved flower painters. It is a book to inspire gardeners and to be cherished by all lovers of natural history."
