Lovely Evie Grant is secretly pregnant by her beloved Davie Grainger, and frightened for her future. She has heard no word from him away at the war – has he abandoned her, or is he dead?

While she waits for news, other men are returning, wounded and broken, from the front. One of these is the Baird's son Andrew. Evie befriends him, but she cannot prevent him from falling under the evil influence of fellow servant Effie Jordan.
