Synopsis
In the hotly anticipated follow-up to Jill & Dragon, feisty Jill and her loyal companion Dog are back and ready for another adventure. Reading a new picture book, Jill is horrified to discover a magnificent lion forced to join the circus and drive a toy car around in endless circles. Lion is so demoralised, his tears have started to blur the words of the story. Jill bravely decides to jump into the book and rescue Lion, landing in the middle of a particularly dangerous chapter. But with Dog at her side, nothing is too difficult for Jill to conquer, and she sets out to return Lion to his rightful place as king of the jungle. In its forms and colours [Barnes] reflects something of the quality found in printed books during times of economic depression such as the French Père Castor books from before the Second World War, or Puffin books from the 1940 s and 50 s printed in an England under rationing . . . Barnes work captures the spirit of that age and appropriates its formal constraints, and whilst remaining very much the master of her art, she inserts herself into a tradition without falling into pastiche . . . She uses bold, geometric shapes and flat colours, like spot colours, to create patterns and subsequent forms that are both decorative and descriptive. About the Author
esley Barnes is an illustrator and animator based in Glasgow. Her distinctive work straddles the spheres of fashion, music, children s literature, film and product design. She has collaborated with the V&A in London; Scottish band Belle & Sebastian; children s Praise for Jill & Dragon: magazines Anorak and OKIDO; and Glamour and Stylist magazines.
