A true rail enthusiast, William Bleasdale has produced an enthusiastic travelogue of his three journeys through Ireland and Scotland by rail. Profusely illustrated, the book is designed to appeal to rail buffs, historians, holiday-makers and armchair travellers alike. From steam trains to intercity services, from busy main lines to tiny sections of track restored and maintained by enthusiasts, the wide range of railways to be enjoyed in each of these two countries is explored. William Bleasdale also takes the reader on his many detours by road and ferry to see various places of interest. He gives detailed descriptions of the varied and beautiful scenery he encounters, from the bleak splendour of north-east Scotland, to the shores of western Ireland. His fascination with the history of the places he visits comes across in the wealth of detail in these pages. But above all, his knowledgeable account of railways past and present underpins the travelogue - the voice of an ex-railway man whose passion for the locomotives is as strong as ever.

'When it comes to railway journeys, make no mistake, Bleasdale's on the right track.' - Gyles Brandreth. --Gyles Brandreth
William Bleasdale was born in Chester but at an early age moved with his parents to Anglesey in North Wales. His passion for railways and rail travel began at the age of four, when he travelled on an old push-and-pull train from Amlwch in Anglesey to Bangor.
He began his working career as a booking and parcels clerk with British Railways in 1961. After working at a small country station near Wrexham he took on relief work, which involved travelling throughout North Wales by train - William describes this as his favourite job.
He attained qualifications in local government administration and worked for the Roads and Bridges Department of Cheshire County Council, before becoming a careers officer with Clwyd County Council. William's two sons live and work in Wales, and he has one granddaughter. He is a keen cook, specialising in Asian and Moroccan dishes.
