Louis-Antoine Comte de Bougainville (1729-1811) is best known for his circumnavigation of the globe from 1766 to 1769. About the Author:

John Dunmore is Professor Emeritus of French at Massey University, New Zealand. He has written more than 20 books on French navigation in the Pacific and is acknowledged as a world authority on the subject. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1976 and an officer of the Ordre des Palmes Academique in 1986.
