'Well written and entertaining' --Michael Winner
'A page-turning experience to remember.' --Joseph Wambaugh, author of The Choirboys"
From the Author:
Sit down in that comfortable chair - it doesn't matter if
it's in front of a glowing, crackling fire on a winter's evening or if it's
on a veranda overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean. Pour yourself a
glass of good wine (this, by the way, is mandatory) and open this book.
Immerse yourself in the world of the Metropolitan Police of long ago -
where ethnic officers were named Jock, Paddy and Taff and everybody seemed
to be pulling in the same direction; to arrest the bad guys and put them
behind bars. This was my world as a uniformed copper and later as a
detective, and it was so enjoyable that I couldn't wait to go to work.
Pour yourself another glass - go on, you know you deserve it - but here, I
must enter a cautionary word. If you are under the age of say, thirty, the
police-work which you will read about in these pages, with their mixture of
excitement, humour, drama and pathos might appear bewildering to you. That
doesn't mean to say you won't enjoy it; I'm sure you will, but savour the
moment because I assure you, you will never see the like of this
no-nonsense policing ever again.
