The Dangerous Road follows Gwilym and his dog Brown as they go off on their first trip to the livestock markets in England. He is being looked after and guided by his father's shepherd Huw. They set off in high spirits, but soon start learning hard lessons when Brown makes a bad mistake as the sheep cross a ford. Gwilym struggles with Huw and his reliance on his Bible (just stories, according to Gwilym), but he soon realises that there is more to it that just a book of stories when the flock is attacked first by stray dogs, then by rustlers. An exciting historical adventure story for children aged 8-11, based on Psalm 23.

Synopsis:
Gwilym looked at the mountains towering ahead, through which they must pass. He felt a tingle of excitement. His own life had been spent in his home valley tucked down behind the cliffs, with the sea on the other side. Droving in mountain country was dangerous, they said. Sometimes sheep were stolen by robbers. Sometimes, coming home, the drovers would be robbed of the money they were carrying. Sometimes the winter weather came early, with winds and frosts and snow on the tops. He shivered a little at the thought. Gwilym and his dog Brown are on their first trip taking his father's sheep to market. They'd be having a good time if Huw, the old shepherd, didn't always want to spoil their fun. But soon the dangers of the drovers' roads threaten to put a stop to their fun, and their lives, all together.
About the Author:
Eleanor Watkins has written many books for Scripture Union, the most recent being The Dangerous Road, the story of a Welsh 19th-century sheep farmer's son making his first journey on the dangerous road to the sheep markets of Gloucester. Eleanor lives in Herefordshire.
