Wales at War - Softcover

9781843233213: Wales at War

Synopsis

War conjures all kinds of visions and feelings for everyone, but none are as intense as the memories engraved in the minds of people who lived through the harrowing experience. People living in Wales during the Second World War have a fascinating tale to tell and in Wales at War Phil Carradice interviews people from all walks of life about their experiences. School children, evacuees, home guard, wardens, firemen, policemen, land army girls, factory workers, Bevin boys, soldiers, conscientious objectors and prisoners of war are all featured in this book. The voices in the book are those of the people, over-arched by the author’s commentary and explanatory paragraphs. A brief chronology of the war is also included so that events mentioned can be put in their context. This book ties in with a BBC Radio Wales programme of the same name which the author helped to research, compile and produce. The first programme goes on the air on October 15th 2003. Copies of !
Wales at War will be given as competition prizes on BBC Wales radio programmes which should help to promote the book. Some parts of the country are featured in detail: a chapter deals with the Rhondda and the bombing of Cwmparc, Treorchy and a chapter is dedicated to the tank fire farm at Pembroke Dock in 1941. The lively and accessible nature of the text with 80 photographs from the archives will give this book a broad appeal. An ideal Christmas present for on older member of the community and all those with an interest in history.
