The third and final volume in Sir Arthur Bryant's essential History of Britain and the British People tells how the nation rose to imperial greatness at a price, and how social reforms eventually remedied the poverty caused by the cost of empire and the Industrial Revolution. In 1815, Britain was just another European power. However, during the course of the next hundred and forty years it became a strong empire. Bryant writes not only about the positive, but about the negative side of this growth. He describes the downtrodden workers of the Industrial Revolution and follows the 'search for justice' as the population gained the right to vote and regulations were put in place to improve education and working conditions. His story ends with Britain's victory in the Second World War and a nation at peace. With a new preface by Reba N Soffer. AUTHBIO: Sir Arthur Bryant was born in a house on the Royal Sandringham estate and served in the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. He wrote hugely popular history books, reviving the neglected art of writing history as literature. His first historical biography, Charles II, was published in 1931, followed by Macaulay. Another popular work was his history of the Napoleonic Wars in three volumes. Bryant was knighted in 1954, made a Companion of Honour in 1967 and died in 1985.
