A comprehensive and compelling study of the church and the complexities of nineteenth century London. Challenging our understanding of the culture in working London at this time, Lewis presents a well-structured and illuminated work that contributes substantially to the study of evangelicalism and mission in nineteenth century Britain.

Review:
... well researched and pleasingly illustrated and . . . makes a substantial contribution to the study of Evangelicalism in ninteenth-century Britain. -- Victorian Studies, Autumn 1988

For decades historians have asked for more research on mid-and late-Victorian Anglican evangelicalism, and Lewis responds with a valuable account .... -- American Historical Review, June 1988

The study is well-researched, and period illustrations focus on pertinent issues. Upper-division undergraduates and above -- Choice, September 1987

This splendid work . . . is, quite simply, the most sophisticated monograph which we possess on English evangelicalism for its period -- Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 1987
From the Author:
Much of the historical work on the nineteenth century has been historical writing "from above": many historians have been far more interested in what John Keble may have said to John Henry Newman when strolling across the quad of Oriel College. This work seeks to investigate what the poorest of the poor believed and how evangelicals (both within and outside the Church of England) sought to win them to Christian faith. In doing so it focusses on three key societies that took the lead in this work and sets these societies in the larger social, ecclesiastical and political settings of the day.
