Portrait of Richmondshire is an impression in photographs of this magnificent and beautiful area nestling on the edge of the Pennines. At its heart is the Georgian town of Richmond which, with its Norman castle, cobbled Market Square and Georgian Theatre Royal, is the gateway to the Dales.

Richmondshire covers an area of approximately 509 square miles, a large part of it being in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. However, there are about 50 villages and hamlets spread out across this region, including Ravensworth, Reeth, Moulton and Scorton, as well as bigger towns such as Leyburn. These settlements are often extremely photogenic, visited because of their sheer prettiness or because they have been onTV or film - such as "All Creatures Great and Small".

Apart from the populated districts, there are wonderful landscapes to be had throughout, especially on the 26 mile long road between Richmond and Hawes, which are particularly inspiring. This dramatic scenery is revealed in its full glory in over 140 superb images captured through the lens of locally-based photographer Henrietta Byrne.
