Henry Williamson (1895-1977) spent most of his adult life in North Devon and is perhaps the most significant West Country author of the last hundred years. His Tarka the Otter (1927) had a major influence on environmental thinking and his fifteen-volume series A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight (1951-69) is an unrivalled account of three generations of lower-middle class life in England from the 1890s to the 1950s and through two world wars. As a writer he was prolific, long-lived and an inveterate reviser and re-user of his material. This ground-breaking work documents, at least in outline, all Williamson's known publications, including all printings of his own books (over 400 items), his contributions to works predominantly by other authors (over 40 items), and his articles or letters in newspapers and magazines (over 800 items). For each of the main books there is a physical description and a list of contents, with notes on the background to the work and any previous publication of the material, if known. For The Flax of Dream and the Chronicle there are lists of the main characters, and at the end a list of the principal writings about Williamson. The book provides a compact but comprehensive bibliographical introduction to all Williamson's publications, in a volume that is portable, and practical. It will serve not only as a manual for the identification of Williamson's writings but also as a tool for further research into the whole range of his work.
