This book has been researched and published as a result of spectacular findings which have shed new light on these Ice Age giants. Standing higher than houses and weighing more than the combined weight of 130 humans, mammoths roamed the Earth for some 200,000 years, finally dying out as the Egyptians were constructing their pyramids. This book traces the history of this remarkable species, from its origin to its extinction less than 4,000 years ago. Carefully piecing together the evidence, Mammoths scrutinises new archeological findings to establish how these creatures lived, died and interacted with human culture.

An excellent study in the natural history of an extinct group of animals. It is a work of scientific scholarship written for the general reader and is a highly recommended addition to the library of any Ice Age enthusiast. || Well presented with numerous excellent photographs, drawings and diagrams and will no doubt appeal to younger readers though it's certainly not a book aimed at children... the general reader will learn much about these marvelous animals. || A lavishly produced book, with immaginative colour reconstructions, diagrams and photographs, all updated since it was originally published in 1994. It is an excellent buy for adults and children alike, who want to know more about one of the giants of our prehistoric past. || There must be some reservations about any book that claims to be definitive, but in this case the surprising thing is not the amount of information that the authors have packed in alongside the many illustrations, but the fact that the text and presentation is so very engaging.
