A fantastic collection of stories, set just before, during and after the events of the film Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, featuring previously unseen adventures in the lives of Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn, his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, the young Queen Amidala, and the boy at the centre of the saga, Anakin Skywalker. Discover how Qui-Gon Jinn thwarts a last ditch attempt to kill him by the unscrupulous trader Watto; listen to Obi-Wan Kenobi's very own account of his adventures, as he confers with the Jedi Master Yoda; learn how Queen Amidala -- with a bit of help from Jar Jar- saves the day when a thief steals an important component of Anakin's podracer; and find out just how Anakin got the parts to repair that pod, together with a startling vision of the young boy's destiny. Thought you knew the whole story? Think again...

Thanks to its phenomenal success and rapacious fan base, criticism aimed at Star Wars is swiftly rendered useless with the clarion cry of "But, it's Star Wars!!" It is likely that this will be regarded in the same way, offering, as it does, little beyond the film itself, but will undoubtedly please those who want their repeat visits to that galaxy far, far away any way they can get them. Collecting the one-shot comics that appeared with the film's release, each tale revolves around the main characters and how they are all affected by their fateful first meeting. It is ironic that the best tale here summarises the film's plot without diversion, as Obi-Wan recounts his experiences in The Phantom Menace to Jedi Master Yoda. Its principal draw is the fantastic art by Martin Egeland, which pulls off the considerable feat of making the light sabre fights really leap from the page--no easy task. Elsewhere, Anakin meets a space pilot and wistfully dreams of being a Jedi, Jar-Jar Binks and Queen Amidala try and save a thirst-stricken alien colony and Qui-Gon helps Anakin deal with his slave-owner's treachery. The aim here was not to provide the grand space opera thrills, but explore the small character moments that get lost in the excitement. With that in mind, this works, but will certainly leave you thirsting for more. George Lucas will be only too happy to provide. --Danny Graydon
