About the Author:

Alexander Pope (1688-1744) received a brief Catholic schooling but was otherwise self-educated. Severe illness during his childhood led to stunted growth and Pope never grew beyond 4 feet 6 inches. The Rape of the Lock (1714), a humorous poem in classical style, gained him instant fame and this was followed among other works by his translations of Homer's epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. He died in 1744 at his villa in Twickenham.
