A Civil War veteran named John Carter, looking for treasure finds a world beyond his wildest dreams. When he is ambushed by Apaches he takes shelter in a sacred cave and is transported to Mars. Here he finds himself possessed of great strength and agility, and through the exercise of his new power comes to earn respect from the green skinned Martians known as Tharks. The Tharks meanwhile capture the Princess of Helium, a red Martian, but John Carter resolves to return her to her people and starts a campaign that will shake the very face of the red planet.
