Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 21.1 x 14.2 x 3 cm-BRAND NEW- BCE-" The riveting story of Pope St. Celestine V, the pope who retired from the papacy. At the close of the tumultuous Middle Ages, there lived a man who seemed destined from birth to save the world. ."-" This is the story of Celestine V, the first Catholic pope who abdicated. It was the first and only time it had happened in 2012, when the book was published (one year before pope Benedict XVI abdicated). Peter Morrone (Celestine V) had been a hermit for decades when he was elected at the age of 84. He resigned 15 weeks later. -That papal incident gives the author the opportunity to write about the end of the 13th century, a period of time he particularly likes and finds pivotal. Mr Sweeny definitely is an excellent story-teller. -However the book is a strange mix of history and fiction. The author tends to fill the many gaps in what is known about Celestine V with suppositions, see purely fictional stuff. Consequently, the reader who knows little about medieval history might find it difficult to sort out what is historical. The available information on what happened to Celestine V between his resignation and his death a few months later is so incomplete that the books last chapters feel a bit as if the author is padding out. In addition, Mr Sweeney is no historian. He relies on essays written by others. Some of his sources are listed at the end but not everything the author puts forwards as important is supported by references. I find the author is a little too assertive about some historical points, and the way he puts some of them lacks nuances. -This is definitely no solid history book, but a subjective account. It is so detailed that it might mainly appeal to Roman Catholic readers who are attached to papacy. This said, the book might have lost some of its original interest after a second pope resigned the year after of it was published."- Sbo. Seller Inventory # 014626
