Born to missionary parents in China and a contemporary of Ruth Bell Graham, Lu Wayland Harkey traveled to the United States as a young child and grew up in the hills of West Virginia. She and her husband, Marty Harkey, raised three children. While the children were in grammar school, Marty left his position as an engineer with General Electric to go to seminary. Lu, Marty, and their children shared many adventures in their years as a family in ministry.
