Born on Leap Year day 1928, Austin, Texas, to John A Ferris, Sr. and Frances Dean White, melding pre-revolution America with first generation Lebanese heritage, "Doc" Ferris thrived as a child at Newman School. His father left S. Ferris Sons and started a men's wear business in Corpus Christi, where he finished high school in 1945. "Doc" studied Pre Med at Texas A&I and Tulane and finished medical school there in 1953. After internship at Denver General and Surgical training at Parkland in Dallas, he served two years as an Air Force doctor and settled his family in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where he and Sarah Jane Allen Ferris raised 10 children, 38 grandchildren, and 4 great grand children. "Doc" avoids boredom by writing this memoir and working with mentally retarded children at the Rio Grande State Center. From early life in Austin to maturity in Corpus Christi, and his marriage and family life in the Rio Grande Valley, "Doc" Ferris has witnessed and participated in hostage situations, near death poisoning cases, dangerous accidents related to agriculture, and still found time to farm and ship the best grapefruit in the world. His tenure on the staff of Valley Baptist Hospital has set a record for an active staff physician of 56 years. None of this would have been possible had it not been for the love and support of his valiant wife, Sarah Jane Allen, whom he wed on June 12, 1953 at the Corpus Christi Cathedral with Father Anthony Goegele presiding.
