"What always bewilders me," Hadria says, bending over the balustrade among the ivy, "is the enormous gulf between what might be and what is, in human life." In a bleak and solitary district of Scotland, a group of children form a secret society -- the Preposterous Society, they call it -- for the discussing of ideas. Of them, Hadria seems especially to have absorbed the spirit of those mystic northern twilights. A slight, dark-haired girl, she has a pale, rather mysterious face, and large, bewitched-looking eyes -- yet she is full of life, and is an inspiration to her siblings . . . for her thoughts as much as for her actions. Now a new thought disturbs her -- springing from a chance disagreement with a quotation from Emerson. In thinking of the greatness Emerson achieved, she wondered: could a woman do the same? Would circumstances allow a woman to raise herself to the same heights, in a society that expects it of a man?

Review:
"Feminists of the 1890s have much to say to feminists of the 1990s. The extraordinary detective work and critical acumen of Margaret Gullette have restored Mona Caird's The Daughters of Danaus to the canon of 'New Women' literature. The Daughters of Danaus is an important and welcome edition."
--Elaine Showalter

"Mona Caird is a treasure in whose rediscovery we can truly rejoice. Caird, her heroine Hadria, and her editor Margaret Gullette, speak eloquently of women's strengths we can emulate."
--Mary Anne Ferguson

"I am delighted that the Feminist Press is publishing this important and highly readable book by a pivotal fin-de-siecle feminist. Critics have too long neglected the important role played by women authors in establishing the terms of the debate for both literature and feminism during the 1890s. The publication of The Daughters of Danaus should help to rectify this situation."
--Martha Vicinus
About the Author:
Alice Mona Caird (1854-1932) was a British novelist and essayist whose feminist views sparked controversy in the late 19th century. Caird published her first two novels, Whom Nature Leadeth (1883) and One That Wins (1887), under the pseudonym "G. Noel Hatton", but these drew little attention and subsequent writings were published under her own name. She came to prominence in 1888 when the Westminster Review printed her long article "Marriage", in which she analyzed indignities historically suffered by women in marriage and called its present state a "vexatious failure", advocating the equality and autonomy of marriage partners.
