About the Author:
The novels I write are historical fiction. Simply put, I enjoy thinking about these periods in history – medieval Scotland and first-century Palestine – the interests of the people, the challenges they faced, the joys that they experienced because of their historical circumstances. My interest in the Scottish Middle Ages in large part grew out of my heritage. A descendant of emigrant Scots from the 1760s, I studied medieval Scottish literature at the University of York in England, and I have published articles on 15th-century Scottish literature and history and an edition of the last part of "The Meroure of Wyssdome," published by the Scottish Text Society in 1990. The "Meroure" features prominently in my other Scottish novel, "An Early Fall." I live in Bristol, Tennessee, with Karen, my wife of 35 years, and two cats and two dogs. Our daughter, Kate, and her husband, Justin Reynolds, live in the Borders of Scotland, not far from where the action in the Scottish stories take place. Our son, Seth, and his wife, Kristine, live in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since 1982 (with a brief vocational detour), I have taught in the English Department at King College. My hobbies are reading, writing, gardening, carpentry, and watching British mysteries with Karen.
