The Nason surname came to America early in the settlement of New England, initially in the person of Richard Nason, and it has since spread throughout the continent. Never numerous, the Nason clan has been overlooked by genealogists, and Daniel Nason of Orford, New Hampshire provides documentation of one branch of the Nason family rooted in New England. Prior to publication of this book, the ancestry of Daniel Nason of Orford had not been established; this book also corrects errors that have appeared in the past regarding his children and their spouses. Daniel Nason and Clarissa Sawyer were married at Piermont, New Hampshire, in 1793. They settled in the adjoining town of Orford, in the northern reaches of the Connecticut River Valley, where they raised eleven children. All of their children survived to adult life and married, of itself an achievement in those times. During their lifetimes, the places of abode of Daniel's children spanned the continent, from Calais, Maine, to Monterey, California. With the death of Daniel in 1854, the Nason family was gone from Orford, with Nasons Pond the only evidence of their presence there during the previous five decades. Typical of many New England families of that era, there are descendants still living within a short drive of the ancestral home town; in this family, none with the Nason surname. There were five sons: Samuel, who moved to Ohio and then Kansas; Daniel, of Boston and Cambridge in Massachusetts; John, of Orford and Haverhill in New Hampshire; Andrew, of Roxbury and Lynn in Massachusetts; and Joseph, of Orford and later Newbury,Vermont. The daughters numbered six: Hannah, resided in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and lastly Massachusetts; Clarissa, lived in New Hampshire; Mary, went to Ohio, probably with her brother, Samuel; Esther, of Orford and Piermont in New Hampshire; Joanna, lived in California; and Betsey, of Lowell, Massachusetts, and later resided in New Hampshire.
