Millions of American students today hate, despise, loathe, or even FEAR mathematics. Anxiety in the classroom leads to far too many students struggling and underperforming as learners, which can have a long-lasting impact on their potential—both personally and professionally.

Based on the framework from Peters’ award-winning book, The Metus Principle: Recognizing, Understanding, and Managing Fear, Peters and Hobaugh take a close look at the connections between fear, motivation, and learning. Strategies and classroom examples are provided to help readers recognize, understand, and manage the fear of math—leading to meaningful connections with math activities and deep, conceptual understanding.

Written for administrators, teachers, parents, and students, I’m Just Not a Math Person! focuses on building relationships and confidence in the classroom to foster a learner’s mindset and help students and teachers achieve their goals.

Review:

“Brian and Kristine have created powerful connections between the heart and mind and the learning of math. It is interesting to consider that the struggle and fear of math may have less to do with numbers themselves.” —Laura Henderson, Founder and CEO of Epiphany Learning

“I’m Just Not a Math Person! is an insightful and deep read. My mind was blown countless times as I read, making connection after connection to my own life experiences both as a student and as a teacher. The “aha” moments broadened my understanding and helped me gain valuable insight into the minds of my students and the real-life classroom examples helped to solidify my understanding and connect the ideas to my classroom. The knowledge and understanding I have gained will help me be more successful as I move forward and help more students access their mathematical potential.” —Darral Sessions, Math Curriculum Specialist at Wichita Public Schools

“Peters and Hobaugh present a great case for teaching to the whole child, especially within the context of math – an academic subject unfortunately feared by so many. The concepts and applications, presented in a conversational and approachable manner, make it an enjoyable read for any teacher of K-12 mathematics.” --Dr. Catherine Oleksiw, Managing Principal at Measured Transitions LLC

“Brian and Kris have done a fantastic job of making math anxiety and fear understandable. They unpack the sociological elements of fear that intersect with how we all learned math, highlighting the WHY, and then provide usable and understandable solutions that always tie back to the research. This will benefit any teacher or parent by providing insight into how the brain learns and deals with “math fear.” This book is a must read for teachers of mathematics at all levels.” —Chris Castillero, Mathematics Specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education

“I loved math as a kid; however, I had friends who would literally get sick at the sight of a math problem. Brian and Kristine’s book shows that math is not a bad word and gives the truth about how to navigate the fear of math.” —Jody Harris, Award-Winning Inventor, Best-Selling Author, and Motivational Speaker

“The authors masterfully discuss the heart of mathematics classrooms in our country: the constraints and shortcomings of “The System,” the realities of our students and society, and our duty and commitment as leaders and educators. With authentic classroom excerpts and lesson ideas, the reader is left inspired with relevant applications built on the foundations of NCTM’s Process Standards and the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practices.” —Julia Baucum, Mathematics Content Area Specialist, Scottsbluff Public Schools

“A great book that is a must read for all math teachers, new or experienced. Brian and Kris provide excellent ideas to get students engaged in, and enjoying, math. I was inspired by the book to make changes in my classroom and implement strategies to reach out to all of my students. While we cannot make everyone love math, we can attempt to take the fear of math out of our classrooms when working with our students.” —Vicky Wood, Math Coordinator for the Glenwood Community School District

“Nicely done! The concept is definitely interesting and worth considering.” —Stefanie Rothstein, Academic Coach at Rocori Area Schools
