Artfully written and beautifully illustrated -The Beacon I didn't want to read a proselytising work nor did I want to read a distasteful send-up. But I am relieved to report that this book did not offend on either score. "This Saint Will Change Your Life" is an amusing collection of saints dedicated to the more unusual life circumstances; from skaters to motorcyclists, everyone has a patron saint. And what I liked most is that the tone of the book is completely neutral; it just presents the facts without trying to persuade - which surprised me considering the hyperbolic nature of the book's title. One of the things I miss from my former religion are the ritual visuals, so it was pleasing to see a photo gallery of old-fashioned saint's cards amongst the pages. I am impressed with the research that has gone into this book, and I have learned a lot from it. Who knew vampire hunters had a patron saint (St. Marcellus of Paris)? It looks lovely and is beautifully laid out with sets of pictures intertwined. The saints appear alphabetically arranegd by whatever they are patrons of.
