From the Inside Flap

The world’s friendliest dog, the Golden Retriever, is also counted amongst the most talented and popular of companion dogs. Renowned for his lustrous golden coat, his buoyant personality and his lusty desire to hunt, the Golden Retriever makes an ideal pet dog for young and old alike. His winning ways and easy-to-train temperament account for his great popularity and success in every field. This book provides the much-needed factual information about Golden Retrievers and their ancestry, character and standard, as well as the proper selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and behaviour of the breed. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup’s arrival and preventing puppy problems. In addition to an extremely authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Golden Retriever. Whether it’s housebreaking problems, hereditary diseases or fleas, this book is the way to prevention, providing the reader with the necessary guidance an owner needs from puppyhood through the senior years. Recommended by top breeders and trainers, this book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Golden Retriever. Topics discussed include: History of the Golden Retriever; Characteristics of the Golden Retriever; The Breed Standard of the Golden Retriever; Your puppy Golden Retriever; Everyday care of your Golden Retriever; Housebreaking and training your Golden Retriever; Health care of your Golden Retriever; Your senior Golden Retriever; Understanding the behaviour of your Golden Retriever; Showing your Golden Retriever.

The youngest and most beautiful of the retriever breeds, the Golden Retriever was originally developed as a waterfowl dog. Although still an admirable shooting dog, the Golden today spends more time romping with the family than in the duck blind or the field. Often considered the ideal dog to hunt over, compete with or just live with and hug a lot, the Golden has something to offer the sportsman, dog fancier or professional dog lover. The Golden Retriever can trace its ancestry back to a single breeding and the first pair of yellow retrievers destined to be called 'Golden'. The fancy is indebted to a Scotsman, the former Sir Dudley Marjoriebanks, first Lord Tweedmouth of Guisachan at Inverness, Scotland, and the first 'breeder' of our golden dog.
