Entering medical school at a time when women were not welcomed by their colleagues, she became an urban pediatrician and paved the way for a future when half of new medical students are women. Looking back on the challenges that she and her father faced, she reflects on the demands of the medical profession and the rewards that make those challenges worthwhile.

About the Author:

Theresa Brey Haddy, MD, received her medical degree and pediatric training at the University of Minnesota and trained in pediatric hematology–oncology in Oklahoma. She taught at the Oklahoma, Michigan State, and Howard University medical schools and worked at the National Institutes of Health, earning listings in Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women. She is also an emeritus professor of pediatrics and child health and an academic advisory staff member of Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.
