Synopsis:
This stimulating collection of children's work arose from the Barbara Petchenik Children's World Map Competition. This competition was created by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) in 1993 as a memorial for Ms. Petchenik, a cartographer who worked throughout her life with maps related to children. This book presents a retrospective selection of one hundred maps submitted over the first decade of the competition. It includes award-winning entries and runners-up as well as many that are the personal favourites of the editors. The maps reflect core values in surprisingly subtle and complex expressions, and messages embedded in the maps are sometimes complex and culturally unfamiliar. Nonetheless, the maps are accessible and inspirational.
