An original guide to Russia and its literature
Russia has more literary museums than any other country in the world and Russian writers have always played a special role in the spiritual, intellectual and political lives of their readers. This book reveals the warmth and energy with which their legacy is cherished. The authors take the reader on a tour of Russia and include descriptions of all the major literary museums as well as the sites of the most important scenes of Russian literature. Readers can trace the steps of Raskolnikov through St Petersburg, or follow Esenin's Bohemian life in Moscow. This pioneering book can be read as a practical guide to a trip around Russia or used as an overview of the nation's literature. A book to be read at home as much as by travellers, the authors sketch not only an extraordinary literary map of Russia but also a whole social and political panorama which unfolds in vivid and remarkable detail.
About the Author
Anna Benn studied Russian at the universities of Exeter and St. Petersburg. The editor of The Insight Guide To Russia, she now lives in London. Rosamund Bartlett holds a doctorate in Russian literature from Oxford University and is an accomplished literary translator and writer on Russian culture. She lives in Durham, England.
