To illustrate the contrasts available in Sun-Tzu's text, the following interpretation can be seen to arise from the same set of Chinese pictograms. The Aggressive Meaning: War is the art of deception (bringing down) - appear to be strong when you are weak, appear to be far away when you are near, appear to be inept when you are able. Peace is the art of inception (raising up) - allow strength and weakness, accept poise and vulnerability both, face death and suffer pain. In the second interpretation, the same conditions are essentially present, but they are based on something positive and "inceptive", i.e, honesty and self-awareness. Here is also the implication that life is not necessarily a battle.

About the Author:

Philip Dunn underwent the traditional English education until his teenage years, which he spent in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. During these years, Dunn trained under the tutelage of a Tibetan master within the walls of a monastic system. He has lectured to thousands in the United States and the United Kingdom on the principles of The Art of Peace.
