This book is about how to explore worms and its fun!!
Another in the Backyard Buddies series, this volume is a good introduction to the common earthworm. Setting the earthworm in the context of invertebrates, worms in general, and annelids in particular, the book looks at the animals1s habitat, ecology, physical characteristics, senses, movement, reproduction, regeneration, feeding, respiration, and more, mixing factual passages with activities that could be carried out with the help of teachers, parents, and friends, using easily obtainable materials. The activities involve inquiry, observation, math, sketching, and research. The text also reports on experiments that school children have done, tells of adult scientific research on earthworms, and hints about carrying out research. A glossary and index are included. The illustrations are photos, amusing cartoons, and tables. Like others in the series it sets out to enthuse children about science, promote a spirit of inquiry, and encourage scientific thought and method. It should do all of these well. The volume is suitable for home and classroom use and general awareness. Science Books and Films Jan/Feb 1997
Wormology and Rolypolyology These two delightful books will appeal to the budding backyard naturalist lurking in many elementary school age children. Each book presents a wealth of information about its subject as well describing lots of hands-on activities that a child can accomplish independently. As an introduction to science, I can1t imagine a better resource. The books tap into a child's own natural curiosity, legitimizing those hundreds of questions so often discounted by busy adults. Investigation and experimentation are presented as natural outcomes of curiosity and the child is encouraged to think of lots of questions-- figure out the answers. At the same time, a significant amount of factual information about science in general and worms and rolypolies in particular are woven seamlessly into the text. Every elementary school child and especially teachers of elementary level science deserve to have one of these books. Literary Lagniappe - 3/96
