A new perspective about the men who fought in the Civil War.
A few comments for those who are interested in 'still hearing the sound of the guns!' First, it is a study about the ordinary men who enlisted in and made the regular army their careers, soldiering and training as artillerymen during the pre-Civil War era in Florida, Virginia, Kansas and Arkansas. At the outbread of the war, the 16,000 regulars formed the backbone of the Union Army before the volunteers from the States were even issued their first pair of "GI" brogans. Second, the unit (Totten's Battery), fought and shed its blood in the relatively obscure Trans-Mississippi theater (as opposed to the highly-publicized Civil War battlegrounds in the East and South) in the battles of Jefferson city, Boonville, Dug Springs, Forsyth, Wilson's Creek and New Madrid/Island No. 10, Missouri, and at Farmington, Iuka and Corinth, Mississippi. Then the unit was virtually destroyed during the battle of Atlanta on 22 July 1864, losing 50% of its personnel, six guns and 100 horses. When the war was over, many of the surviving veterans continued their careers in California and Alaska with little or no fanfare. Third, in the biographical roster of some 350 men who served with Gus Dey, your readers many just find their great grandfathers or models for Civil War reenactors who 'still hear the sound of the guns!'
