Upon examining his life, Winn Conover, successful businessman, pillar of his community, discovers that "something was missing. It was not material..it was something inside." Investigating further, he learns that he is much more than the maddening clutter of his life. Finding that sacred self within but unable to maintain its presence, he walks out of his suburban home one night naked, stripped of his old identity. Thus begins a spiritual odyssey that takes him across the country working as a casual laborer, eating and sleeping in truck stops, sharing his wisdom with his new friends. In Santa Fe, living among the pueblo Indians, he becomes "Anglo Who Became Chief Old Woman's Son." But, before he can claim his new identity, he must return to his family and allow them to release him.

From the Author:
Three-name character poses separate states of awareness.
Since the publication of NAKED INTO THE NIGHT, the man who sought to remake himself as a human being has gone on to exercise his new reality in two more books with a fourth in development. The three names that the character carries--Winn Conover, Booker Jones, and Anglo Who Became Chief Old Woman's Son--represent the three states in the spiritual journey everyone must travel. Readers quickly understand that when the character is identified by one of the names that it implies the state of his awareness, his consciousness, at the time of the thought or action. I have been told that this technique is both useful in understanding the complexities of behavior and unique in literature. Often, the device dramatically illustrates the difference between the rational and the intuitive; our split, fragmented minds which must be united for the individual, and the human collective, to be at peace with ourselves and each other.

There is a background of Nature's key role in understanding, and ultimately realizing ourselves, in my books. This web of relationship is what Natural Peoples, our first American Peoples, the Indians, have to teach us. It is an exciting, dramatic journey to learn these truths as Winn/Booker/Anglo experiences them.
