I am particularly proud of this one. The character grew out of an exceptionally ugly real-life encounter my wife had with a man who was said to have been one of Lt. William Calley's troopers at the My Lai massacre. We wondered at the time which came first, this man's cruel indifference...or the killing of innocents. Joe Potter is my attempt to resolve that question, set post-Wounded Knee rather than after Vietnam largely because I write Westerns, not contemporary war novels.

I hated having to crawl inside Joe Potter's mind every morning when I went to the computer to work. But for the first time in a writing career of more than 20 years the story and the people went down on paper exactly as I hoped they would.
