This is the intimate story of the Green's fateful trip to Italy: how a botched robbery changed their lives and how Reg and Maggie's private decision to donate their son's organs thrust them into the world spotlight. Their decision led to an outpouring of love by the people of Italy, a sharp increase in organ donor rates, and a deluge of media attention. The world's response to the Green's personal tragedy is called the Nicholas Effect.

In 1994, when their seven-year old son Nicholas was killed during a botched car- jacking, Reg and Maggie Green galvanised all of Italy--and the world--by donating Nicholas's organs to seven desperately sick Italians, becoming a model of a grief-stricken family seeking to create good from horror, to reject vengeance in the face of great loss, to work for justice and to proclaim--with each of their grace-filled actions--the superiority of love over hate. In The Nicholas Effect: A Boy's Gift to the World, Reg Green recollects the events--the shooting, the choice to donate Nicholas's organs, the overwhelming Italian response, the trial of the alleged murderers and the Greens' worldwide crusade for organ donation. Since Nicholas's death, the seven Italians who received his organs have thrived--and so have thousands of others who have and will benefit from the worldwide surge in organ donations because of what's been dubbed "the Nicholas Effect." Green's account of this truly heartrending, life-changing story is intensely personal yet will touch every reader's heart and do something few "inspirational" books manage to actually do--change lives. --Ericka Lutz, Amazon.com
Reg Green is the father of Nicholas Green, a seven-year-old California boy, who was shot in a botched robbery during a family vacation in Italy. The decision by Reg and his wife, Maggie, to donate Nicholas' organs and corneas to seven very sick Italians, sent an electric shock around the world. Since then he has written innumerable articles on organ donation and another book, "The Gift that Heals," been interviewed by media around the world, (including Oprah, Barbara Walters and Katie Couric), and participated in making a made-for-tv movie, "Nicholas' Gift," starring Jamie Lee Curtis.
