From the Back Cover:

"Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots?"

Set in post-Civil War North Carolina, The Leopard's Spots tells of the pain of surrender and the effort to rebuild and repair the war-torn and downtrodden South. It exposes the reality of social and race relations during Reconstruction.
The story's leading characters are an eclectic mix of people representative of the time. Among others, they include Charles Gaston, a young man who dreams of a governor's mansion; Sallie Worth, a sweet-voiced daughter of the old-fashioned South who embodies human idealism; Simon Legree, an ex-slave driver and Reconstruction leader; and Maj. Stuart Dameron, chief of the Ku Klux Klan.

About the Author:
Thomas Dixon, Jr., was born in rural North Carolina during the Civil War. Educated at Wake Forest and Johns Hopkins Universities, Dixon was, among other things, a novelist, preacher, lecturer, lawyer, and state legislator. During his lifetime, he published twenty-two novels and several essays, plays, and sermons. Dixon's "Trilogy of Reconstruction" also included The Traitor and The Clansman and was made into D. W. Griffith's cinema masterpiece, Birth of a Nation. He has been named among both the most dated and most contemporary of Southern writers.
