Legendary woodturner Stephen Hogbin's work has been groundbreaking at every turn. He first burst on the scene in the early 1970s with an exhibition of turnings unlike anything seen before-cut apart, re-assembled, enhanced by carving, and bearing little resemblance to the standard round stuff that had previously characterized the lathe. Now, the internationally recognised designer examines eleven of his finest and most innovative creations, distilling each piece to a useful project any woodturner can replicate. This is the first time Hogbin has described his techniques and presented his ideas in step-by-step project format. All of these projects begin with the lathe, but each features inventive cutting into the turned elements and recombining the pieces to make entirely new forms. They do not require advanced technical skills, but will encourage you to break out of the basic vocabulary of woodturning and see marvellous new possibilities.

Review:
"Hogbin on Woodturning" is not a traditional 'here's how-to' book. While exceptionally instructional, its written for an easy read, often autobiographically but featuring a value-added text, each page rich with personal anecdotes and real-life lessons. Presented in waves, inspiring background text and colourful imagery followed by detailed visual instruction spiced with unexpected gems then capped with enticing examples of alternative ways all readers might consider each project, this splendid book is hard to put down. Creative turners or cabinetmakers also will appreciate how Stephen broadens our creative points-of-view from first thoughts about any project through its purpose and ultimate delivery or gifting. No matter whether you're looking for new projects to make, new dimensions to add to your work or an invigorating fresh perspective, at $24.99 "Hogbin on Woodturning" is attractively bound to satisfy.
About the Author:
Stephen Hogbin, while remaining embedded in his own region of Owen Sound is recognized internationally by collectors, educators and professional organizations for his influence in studio wood turning and furniture making. In the early 1970s, he developed a rich vocabulary of alternate forms to the 1000-year-old technique of lathe work. These innovative forms became a keystone to the development of the contemporary domain. Primarily a studio artist with an inclusive and multi discipline approach, he is also an occasional curator and author.
