Synopsis:
"Integrating Draping, Drafting, and Drawing" teaches these three techniques of creating apparel designs the way they are practiced in the industry, that is, by integrating them throughout the creative process. This handy studio reference helps students develop their skills and apply them to the design of garments. In each chapter, illustrations and photographs show a combination of skills and the natural flow between them, and the text completes the explanation with an explanation of the details. Two-dimensional design informs the three-dimensional and vice versa. Draping is presented visually in step-by-step photographs to allow students to see its sculptural nature clearly. The text begins with lists of tools and supplies and introduces the vocabulary and symbols that students will encounter in subsequent chapters. Instructions for producing patterns and slopers for parts of a garment - skirts, bodices, necklines and collars, and sleeves - are presented along with variations so that students will be able to drape, draft, and draw complete dresses. The concluding chapter presents a gallery of drawings of examples from twentieth century designer, Donald Brooks.

His designs, timeless in their execution and fabrication, provide an inspiring model. The features are: synergy of visual and verbal instruction for a full presentation of the fashion design process; front, back, and side-view photos of draping to enhance an appreciation of its sculptural nature; glossary and supply lists within first chapter to familiarize students with the tools and technical terms they will need to master; and clear presentation of steps of draping, drafting, and drawing for design practitioners that also give merchandisers and other fashion professionals an overview of the process.
