Stargazing and other bad habits
I spent the summer of 1992 at La Silla, Chile, home of the European Southern Observatory, where, despite snowstorms and massive equipment failures, I attempted to do some solar astrophysics. Alone among 200 or so male astronomers, I was also attempting to come to terms with the fact that I was a lesbian. This novel is based on that experience, but the story is much more about how I wished it could have been than how it really was. I'm no longer an astronomer, but I'll always be a stargazer, curious about the past and hopeful for the future.
