Leavenworth, Kansas, was my home town.
They say when considering writing books, that one should know something about the subject....I know Leavenworth, Kansas. I was raised there, on a farm, and in many ways not terribly dissimilar from the story. This is my first romance novel and I decided to use other issues I know to create the characters in the book. Some of those issues were: military witch-hunts for lesbians, the hunts'impact on lives, agriculture in Kansas, gardening, the varied work efforts necessary for those who live on farms, and, if truth be known.... wayward hearts looking for home (need I say more). The setting and various locations in the book are taken from the family farm, including and most particular the pond which still exists about a quarter mile from the house.Wonderful memories there. And, finally, there is the instance, from years gone a time during which developers were trying to "sneakily" build a road through the countryside which would have consumed the home where I grew up.
In Windrow Garden, each chapter begins with issues related to the land and its cultivation, care, and nurture....these brief practical essays are then woven into the story of the deepening relationship between the books two main characters, Nicole Jager and Sally Windrow. The book is a blend of naturalistic metaphore and romantic prose about the interwining lives of those two women.
The farm was where, as a little girl, I ran across the fields, worked with my family, read, and dreamed of becoming an author someday. In part, the book is a celebration of those dreams coming true.
I enjoyed writing the book because it provided me with the opportuntiy of remembering the farm, recalling my own growth, friends, and family. The book also gave me the opportunity to applaud the trials and triumps of the women who love women that I have know over the years. I hope you enjoy the book at least as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Farmer Sally Windrow is preparing for a year's farming when her hired hand is seriously injured. Sally places an ad in the local paper and the advert is answered by a woman, Nicole Jaeger. Soon the seeds of love are being sown.
