A Case of Culture Shock
"Wildwood Flowers" chronicles the comic plight of Bev and Andie, a long-term lesbian couple from Boston, who move to the tiny town of Morgan, Kentucky, where Andie has accepted a teaching job at a small Christian college. Fearful for her new job, Andie constructs a closet around herself and Bev, telling new neighbors and coworkers that she and Bev are cousins. The hilarious complications that ensue raise some interesting questions about the cost of the closet and the meaning of community.
"Wildwood Flowers" was my first novel, and writing it was interesting because it gave me the opportunity to view my home region, rural Southeastern Kentucky, from an outsider's perspective. The view was quite illuminating.
