Sarah Susanka's first book The Not So Big House created a movement which has redefined the way we think about the space we live in, It spoke to millions of disenchanted homeowners who wanted to downsize their dream home ideas without diminishing the dream or the style. The secret lies in a better use of space: let your activities and lifestyle define your rooms.

Review:
Ostensibly American, this is nevertheless an indispensable handbook for anyone designing their own home or carrying out major renovations. The author's concept is to get the most out of a smaller space than actually needed, ending up with a visually more spatial area. Full of inspirational architectural and interior design ideas, the twenty five properties looked at in depth range from detached new homes, renovated farmhouses and cottages to restructured apartments. Fireplaces, balustrades, staircases, ceilings and more are all adapted to maximise space whilst retaining a homely feel. Sarah Susanka, an experienced architect, writes in an easy, informal manner, clearly explaining the merits of each particular design aspect. A must for renovators and an intelligent, valuable asset for architects. - Lucy Watson

Book Description Softcover. Condition: new. The Not So Big Housecreated a movement that is changing the way people think about the American home. That groundbreaking book proposed a new blueprint for the American home: a house that values quality over quantity, with an emphasis on comfort and beauty, a high level of detail, and a floor plan designed for today's informal lifestyle.Creating the Not So Big House is the blueprint in action. Focusing on key design strategies such as visual weight, layering, and framed openings, Sarah Susanka takes an up-close look at 25 houses designed according to Not So Big principles. The houses are from all over North America in a rich variety of styles -- from a tiny New York apartment to a southwestern adobe, a traditional Minnesota farmhouse, and a cottage community in the Pacific Northwest. Whether new or remodeled, these one-of-a-kind homes provide all the inspiration you need to create your own Not So Big House. Seller Inventory # DADAX1561586056
