I wrote this book to introduce people to the amazing variety of hiking in north central Arizona. You can hike among desert flowers one day, and through cool, green alpine forest the next. The great elevation range not only adds variety, it means you can hike year round. When the southern deserts are hot, escape to the high, cool mountains near Flagstaff. When the mountains are snow covered, check out the trails in the balmy red rock desert around Sedona.

The book features 86 carefully chosen hikes. It's not just a trail catalog- I put together loops and combined trails whenever I could. Many are easy walks on trails, while some are demanding backpack trips. The hikes are organized by areas, so you can find trails nearby. There are photos of nearly every hike to help you visualize the countryside. Each hike is completely and accurately described, with additional information on the natural and human history of the area.
