Review:
"...were she alive today Esther Kreitman would be bracketed with Zadie Smith and Monica Ali." -- Clive Sinclair, Times Literary Supplement, 23rd April, 2004

"Kreitman has a growing reputation, both as a Yiddish storyteller in her own right and as a feminist icon." -- Howard Jacobson, The Times, 10th April 2004

"Rebellious, she refused to kill her art, she broke glass ceilings and gave voice to a woman’s being and soul." -- A Celebration of Women Writers

The Ugly Duckling of this family of Yiddish stars...this important translation (of Blitz) will groom her for literary swandom. -- Babelguides review by Ray Keenoy

This is a classic of feminist literature available to a new generation. Recommended for all libraries. -- US Library Journal
From the Publisher:
In Deborah, Kreitman recalls much of her own youth as the elder sister who watched her younger brothers, Isaac Bashevis and IJ Singer, enjoy the education denied her. As Bashevis later explained, she was the inspiration for "Yentl", his famous story about a girl who dresses as a boy in order to study at the yeshiva. While Kreitman never undertook Yentl's feat, she made an astounding accomplishment of her own: against all expectations and against all odds, she wrote honestly fiercly, and profoundly about what is now a lost world.
