Synopsis:
The archives of National Trust houses are rich in drawings and watercolours by leading architects and landscape gardeners of their day. Whether designs for surviving features or schemes that have long vanished, these present a picture of changing tastes in gardens over four centuries. A few of these designs are now on show, but most of them have never been seen by the public. This illustrated catalogue, with an introduction by Gervase Jackson-Stops, the Trust's architectural adviser, putting the designs in their historical context, accompanies an exhibition in England and the United States in aid of the Stowe Landscape Gardens Appeal.
