About the Author:

A native of New Orleans, Emilie Griffin received a B.A. in English and Classics from Newcomb College of Tulane University. She also pursued graduate studies in theology at Notre Dame Seminary. A professional writer, editor, and marketing consultant, Emilie has won fifty awards for creativity. Over her career, she has worked for major advertising agencies in New York and New Orleans, and studied playwriting with Edward Albee at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York. In 1998-1999 she was a guest columnist for Praying magazine. She recently collaborated with Richard Foster on a book entitled Spiritual Classics (her seventh major title). She has worked extensively as a retreat and workshop leader with Christians of all denominations. She is a member of the board of Renovare, an infra-church movement committed to Christian renewal. Emilie is the award-winning author of several books on the spiritual life including Turning: Reflections on the Experience of Conversion, Wilderness Time: A Guide for Spiritual Retreat, and Doors Into Prayer (Paraclete Press). Emilie and her husband live in Alexandria, Louisiana and are the parents of three grown children. Her recent book, Wonderful and Dark is This Road is an introduction and invitation to discover the fascinating, and often misunderstood spiritual phenomenon of mysticism.

''The mystic is a person who has attained that union in greater or less degree; or who aims at and believes in such attainment.'' Building on Underhill's statement, Emilie Griffin asserts (albeit quietly, by her particular gift of understatement) that this ''art of union'' in not an end but a beautiful product of the seeker's journey to become intimately acquainted with a loving God. By this strain of logic, mysticism is given, not earned or learned. Yet all are called to prayer; all possess the means of a contemplative life. Griffin's own definition of mysticism -- close intimacy with a loving God -- makes room for the anonymous mystic attentive to ordinary, human living. In this paradigm, the incarnation serves as lodestone -- the Presence that Brother Lawrence (aka Nicholas Herman) practiced is the same Presence which the apostle Paul claims ''is not far from each one of us. For 'in him we live and move and have our being''' (Acts 17:27-28). Though Griffin's distinctions between contemplation and mysticism sometimes blur, her exploration of the mystic path -- illustrated by Sts. Paul and Francis, illuminated in nature, affirmed in both kataphatic and apophatic theologies, and revealed in the language of mystical love -- successfully traces its origin to the divine soil of human being.
