My third Jack Oxby suspense story, and I think it's the best
My Jack Oxby stories involve some particular work by a well known artist. (DaVinci's lost manuscripts, Cezanne self-portratis) This time I chose a particular Imperial egg designed and produced by Peter Carl Faberge. The twist, however, is that this egg was commissioned by Grigori Rasputin, a not too far-fetched premise that has a ring of truth to it. Rasputin was a favorite of Czarina Alexandra, and had received valuable gifts of jewels and money from many admirers (mostly female) and had the financial means to pay for the expensive Imperial egg that Faberge's craftsmen designed and then assembled. Much of the story is set in St. Petersburg, Russia, and in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. My research took my favorite research assistant (my wife Barbara) and me to Moscows and St. Petersburg for an incredible ten days in the homes of two Russian families, and through their eyes, learn about their country and the Russian people. Russia is a nation in transition and offers a colorful tapestry of contradictions, beauty and desperation. I've tried to blend all of this incredible mixture into a suspenseful story that features strong willed people striving to succeed in spite of the obstacles and consequences. I hope you will come along on this adventure. I promise a good read and an exciting visit to places you have heard much about. Jack Oxby, on leave from his post with Scotland, Yard takes on a free-lance assignment from Christopher Forbes to find the Rasputin Imperial egg.
