"Jamaican Politics" is about the left, from the perspective of the left. Combining theory with practical experience, Trevor Munroe records important aspects of Jamaica's political history and at the same time identifies and critically reassesses the assumptions, concepts, and preoccupations of leftist writing. Munroe points to areas where Jamaica's Marxists have allowed concepts to obscure important aspects of reality. He also encourages an awareness of the limitations of the forms of Westminster democracy in the Commonwealth Caribbean. Finally, he argues for a new type of political organization based on an attempt to discern and develop the form of the future from the positives in the movement of the present. The introductory chapter has a self-critical character, as Munroe also works through the concepts and elements of a genuine Caribbean Marxism.
