Candido, o l'ottimismo, talvolta Candido, ovvero l'ottimismo, spesso contratto in Candido, č un racconto filosofico di Voltaire che mira a confutare le dottrine ottimistiche quale quella leibniziana. Lo scrittore francese fu stimolato sicuramente dal terremoto di Lisbona del 1755 che distrusse la cittą, mietendo molte vittime. Voltaire scrisse prima un poema sul cataclisma (1756) e successivamente redasse il Candido (1759); egli scrive il Candido in un periodo successivo a numerose persecuzioni nei suoi confronti che l'hanno portato sulla via di una visione disincantata del mondo. Il romanzo, a dispetto della brevitą, č considerato il magnum opus dello scrittore e filosofo "patriarca dell'illuminismo".
